Shareware is a marketing method that has been around since the 1980's. The shareware model allows users to try software before they buy it. The software generally only functions for a limited time period or is limited in it's features.
The shareware model encourages programmers to write software for niche or specialized markets, that would never attract the attention of commercial 'retail' developers. The model only works when users who enjoy a piece of shareware register it. After all do you think Microsoft or Electronic Arts would develop a game like 4PLAY.
